PLANNED REMOVAL OF OIL RIGS IS DESTROYING EFH. |
|
The Minerals Management Service is planning the removal of over 4,000 oil platforms in the next 10 years. We feel that these platforms have evolved into Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for several species of offshore fish and the removal of this EFH is in direct violation of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. It is our position that these rigs should be toppled in place instead of removed completely. As part of the overall plan, Texas Great Barrier Reef LLC intends to devote resources to prevent the removal of these important EFH structures. In addition, if efforts fail in that regard, we feel that a pro-active artificial reefing program will guarantee suitable habitat will be made available for the important fisheries in the Gulf. |
